Cozyathon read-a-thon.

Hi booklovers

I don't have the best track record with read-a-thons, but the #cozyathon looks like a very nice and cosy read-a-thon. I really like that it doesn't focus on the quantity of what you read but on the quality and the coziness of the reading itself.

The creator of this read-a-thon is Silvia Kay. You can find her announcement video here.

The read-a-thon will take place from February 1st 'till February 15th and the theme is Saint-Valentine. I'm not the biggest fan of Valentine's day, but I am a big fan of making the reading experience very cozy and spreading the love of reading :-)

Like with any read-a-thon there are some challenges:

General dates:

1. Coffee/Tea Date: Read in a coffee shop or tearoom
2. Chocolate Date: Read while eating or drinking chocolate
3. Cake shop Date: Read while eating cake or cookies
4. "Movie" Date: Read while eating popcorn
5. Walk Date: Take a walk while listening to an audiobook
6. Romantic Date: Visit a romantic place and read there
7. Stay-at-home Date: Read wrapped up in a blanket
8. Cinderella Date: Read until midnight

Bookish Dates:

9. Read a book with red or pink on the cover
10. Read a book with a sweet title
11. Read a book about love or relationship
12. Watch a Disney adaptation of a fairy tale of your choice and then read a retelling of it
13. Buddy read a book with someone
14. Have a reading date with (a) friend(s) or your loved one
15. Shopping Date: Buy yourself a bookish present

The challenges in italic are the ones I'm going to try and achieve.

I'm not really going to put together a TBR, because I'm a mood reader and mostly I don't feel like reading the books on my TBR as soon as I put them on the list (weird, I know).

However, I am reading The Well of Ascension at the moment, so I'll definitely be continuing with that. That book will go towards the challenges of 'walk date', 'stay-at-home date' and 'buddy read a book with someone'.

I'm also planning on rereading Gemina (alternating between reading the physical book and listening to the audiobook) with some people from the Of Wonderland Bookclub. I'm rereading this in preparation for the release of Obsidio in March :-)

The only fairytale retelling I have on my shelves (and that I feel like reading at the moment) is The Great Hunt by Wendy Higgins. Unfortunately, this is based on the fairytale 'The singing bone' (I have absolutely no idea what this is about) so I don't think there is a Disney adaptation of it. It's safe to say I will probably not achieve this challenge.

During the second week of the read-a-thon I have a week off, so that will allow me to read until midnight (Cinderella date) and I'll probably read 'Damaged Like Us' by Becca and Krista Ritchie then. That is a New Adult love story and I usually have a hard time putting their books down, so that would be the ideal time to read it.

But like I said, I'm a mood reader, so this 'list' is subject to change :-)

Will you be participating in this read-a-thon? If so, what are the challenges you would like to achieve? Do you have a TBR? Let me know in the comments.

Bye for now

Anticipated 2018 releases - January.

Hi booklovers

I know I'm a bit (very) late to post this, but I wanted to share some of my anticipated releases for the first month of 2018.

Technically, I'm on a kind of bookbuying ban, so I'm not sure if I'll buy all of these anticipated releases. But I wanted to share these books, nonetheless.

January

2nd: Between the Blade and the Heart by Amanda Hocking.
Valkyries have one great responsibility: to return immortals to the afterlife by slaying them. As a Valkyrie, Malin has always known that the balance of the world rests on her ability to carry out orders. But when Malin discovers that her mother spared the life of an immortal who was destined to die, her world is thrown into chaos.

Malin not only wrestles with the knowledge that her mother might not be who she thought—she’s also thrust into the path of a gorgeous blue eyed guy named Asher who needs her help slaying the rogue immortal who destroyed his family. The balance of the world is at stake. And, as Asher competes with Malin’s ex for her love and loyalty, so is her heart.

2nd: A conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole
Octavia has only ever had one goal: to follow in the footsteps of her parents and become a prestigious whitecoat, one of the scientists who study the natural wonders of Faloiv. The secrets of the jungle’s exotic plants and animals are protected fiercely in the labs by the Council of N’Terra, so when the rules suddenly change, allowing students inside, Octavia should be overjoyed.

But something isn’t right. The newly elected leader of the Council has some extremist views about the way he believes N’Terra should be run, and he’s influencing others to follow him. When Octavia witnesses one of the Faloii—the indigenous people of Faloiv—attacked in front of her in the dark of night, she knows the Council is hiding something. They are living in separate worlds on a shared planet, and their fragile peace may soon turn into an all-out war.

With the help of Rondo, a quiet boy in class with a skill for hacking, and her inquisitive best friend, Alma, Octavia is set on a collision course to discover the secrets behind the history she’s been taught, the science she’s lived by, and the truth about her family.

9th: Unearthed by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner.
When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.

For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study... as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first. Mia and Jules' different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.

In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race's secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race...

23rd: Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
Odessa is one of Karthia's master necromancers, catering to the kingdom's ruling Dead. Whenever a noble dies, it's Odessa's job to raise them by retrieving their souls from a dreamy and dangerous shadow world called the Deadlands. But there is a cost to being raised--the Dead must remain shrouded, or risk transforming into zombie-like monsters known as Shades. If even a hint of flesh is exposed, the grotesque transformation will begin.

A dramatic uptick in Shade attacks raises suspicions and fears among Odessa's necromancer community. Soon a crushing loss of one of their own reveals a disturbing conspiracy: someone is intentionally creating Shades by tearing shrouds from the Dead--and training them to attack. Odessa is faced with a terrifying question: What if her necromancer's magic is the weapon that brings Karthia to its knees?

23rd: Markswoman by Mari Mehrotra
Kyra is the youngest Markswoman in the Order of Kali, one of a handful of sisterhoods of highly trained elite warriors. Armed with blades whose metal is imbued with magic and guided by a strict code of conduct, the Orders are sworn to keep the peace and protect the people of Asiana. Kyra has pledged to do so—yet she secretly harbors a fierce desire to avenge her murdered family.

When Tamsyn, the powerful and dangerous Mistress of Mental Arts, assumes control of the Order, Kyra is forced on the run. She is certain that Tamsyn committed murder in a twisted bid for power, but she has no proof.

Kyra escapes through one of the strange Transport Hubs that are the remnants of Asiana’s long-lost past and finds herself in the unforgiving wilderness of a desert that is home to the Order of Khur, the only Order composed of men. Among them is Rustan, a disillusioned Marksman whose skill with a blade is unmatched. He understands the desperation of Kyra’s quest to prove Tamsyn’s guilt, and as the two grow closer, training daily on the windswept dunes of Khur, both begin to question their commitment to their Orders. But what they don’t yet realize is that the line between justice and vengeance is thin . . . as thin as the blade of a knife.

30th: The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother's stories are set. Alice's only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother's tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

30th: Reign the Earth by A.C. Gaughen
Shalia is a proud daughter of the desert, but after years of devastating war with the adjoining kingdom, her people are desperate for peace. Willing to trade her freedom to ensure the safety of her family, Shalia becomes Queen of the Bonelands.

But she soon learns that her husband, Calix, is motivated only by his desire to exterminate the Elementae—mystical people who can control earth, wind, air, and fire. Even more unsettling are Shalia’s feelings for her husband’s brother, which unleash a power over the earth she never knew she possessed—a power that could get her killed. As rumors of a rebellion against Calix spread, Shalia must choose between the last chance for peace and her own future as an Elementae.

This intense, richly drawn high-fantasy by the author of Scarlet will hold readers spellbound.

Out of these anticipated releases, Unearthed is the one I'll probably order soon.
What are/were some your anticipated releases for January? Have you bought or pre-ordered any of these? Let me know in the comments.

The Raven Boys - Maggie Stiefvater - spoiler-free review.

Hi booklovers

It's been a really long time since I last did a book review and even though I don't make (reading) resolutions anymore, I would like to get back into the habbit of reviewing the books I read.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater is the first book I've read in 2018 and I buddyread this with some members of the Of Wonderland bookclub on Goodreads. The theme for January is 'Hyped books' and this one was suggested for the buddyread (a new feature in the club).

I've had this book on my TBR for quite a while now, but I hadn't picked it up.

The reason is simple: I have 182 unread books on my TBR, a lot of which are first books in duologies, trilogies or series and I only have the first one. Since I'm trying to limit my bookbuying, I'm hesitant about picking up those books, because if I like them, I'll want to buy the next books. But for this book I obviously made an exception :-)

Title: The Raven Boys (#1 The Raven Cycle)
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Paranormal
Format: paperback
 Synopsis:
“There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark’s Eve,” Neeve said. “Either you’re his true love . . . or you killed him.”

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them—not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.

His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He has it all—family money, good looks, devoted friends—but he’s looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

Goodreads.com

Characters:
*Blue: She is the female main character of the story. She lives at 300 Fox way together with her psychic mom and a bunch of other psychic women. Unfortunately, Blue doesn't share these psychic abbilities, the only thing she does is make things 'louder' for the other women. Blue isn't really bothered by the fact that she isn't psychic. On the contrary, she is very mature about it. Even though she is very mature, she has also developed a very distinct and excentric personality and she is very comfortable with it: "It hadn't taken her very long to discover that the weirder she looked on the outside - the more she let other kids realize that she wasn't like them, from the very beginning - the less likely she was to be picked on or ignored. The fact was, by the time she got to high school, being weird and proud of it was an asset."
I love Blue as a character, she deals with everything that happens in such a good way.

*Gansey: At first glance, Gansey is a bit of a selfish guy who thinks that since money isn't a problem for him, it isn't a problem for anyone else either. But we soon discover that there is so much more to him than meets the eye. He's so invested in his search for the ley lines and Glendower. He's also a great friend, even though it's not always appreciated by the other three raven boys.

*Adam: I really liked Adam up to a certain point in the story. I really felt for him because he's the only one of the four friends who doesn't have ample money. Even though Gansey repeatedly offers to help him financially, Adam doens't want his 'charity'. At first I thought it was good of him to stand his ground, but after a while it actually gets a bit annoying. He stubbornly doesn't want to see that Gansey wants to get him away from the abusive situation at home.

*Noah: He is a very intriguing character even though we don't know that much about him. I hope to learn more about him in the next books.

*Ronan: This is the character that I could fathom the least. He's loud, he's rude, but he would also do anything for his friends. He carries the weight of his father's death around with him and I think that contributes a lot to his character.

*Whelk: The Latin teacher, who also wants to find Glendower. He is even more obsessed by Glendower than Gansey is. Because of this, I did not like him at all (but I guess that's the point of this character).

*The women of 300 Fox Way: They are very quircky women and I hope we'll get to know them better in the next books.

Personal opinion:
It took me a while to get into the story, but at one point I became really intrigued and I really wanted to continue reading. The paranormal aspect was pretty cool and I liked that Stiefvater mixed the paranormal aspect with a bit of history. I enjoyed the fact that Blue is the only woman in 300 Fox Way that isn't psychic, but that she is still important to them because she enhances their abilities. The fact that Blue is actually the odd one out at school, is pretty nice, she isn't your typical 'golden girl'. I loved the dynamics between Blue and the raven boys, she approaches them according to their character and behaviour.

The last couple of chapters were a bit confusing for me, which was a bit annoying. The very last sentence, however, has made me extremely curious to continue with this series.
Have you read The Raven Boys? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments.

My top ten reads of 2017.

Hi booklovers

Since we're at the beginning of a new (reading) year, I thought I'd share my top 10 reads of the previous with you.

I purposefully put the word 'reads' in the title, because not everyting in this list are books, there are also graphic novels.
#10: I'm already cheating with my number 10 favourite read because it's actually a trilogy: the Firebird trilogy by Claudia Gray.
          1) A Thousand Pieces of You - 5 stars
          2) Ten Thousand Skies Above You - 4 stars
          3) A Million Worlds With You - 4.5 stars
This is one of the few trilogies I actually read backt to back, which is saying a lot! The parallel universe travelling concept was really exciting and I really like Marguerite as a main character.

#9: A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas, 4.5 stars. I know there are some problems with this series, but I liked this third book a lot. I'm very much looking forward to the novella that's coming out this year: A Court of Frost and Starlight. (And I reaaaalllllyyyy want Azriel to have his own book!!)

#8: Alex + Ada: volume 1 - 3. These graphic novels are my favourite graphic novels of last year (I gave all three 5 stars). I loved this story so much, it was really heartbreaking at times, the drawings are so nice. I'm actually sorry that there aren't more than three volumes :'-(

#7: Amour Amour and Infini by Becca & Krista Ritchie, both 4.5 stars. This is actually becoming an annual tradition :-) although these books aren't part of the Addicted / Calloway sisters series. I loved these books and I'm hoping there are going to be more in the Aerial Ethereal universe.

#6: Second Position and Finding Center by Katherine Locke, both 4.5 stars. This is an angsty, but also very good NA duology and I enjoyed it very much.

#5: Heartless by Marissa Meyer, 5 stars. This was the first book I read for the Of Wonderland Bookclub on Goodreads and I loved it. Marissa Meyer is the queen of retellings! You can find my spoiler-free review here

#4: The Others series by Anne Bishop.
          1) Written in Red - 5 stars
          2) Murder of Crows - 5 stars
          3) Vision in Silver - 5 stars
          4) Marked in Flesh - 5 stars
          5) Etched in Bone (audio) - 5 stars
This series is so very addictive and the refreshing part is that there isn't a full-on romance in this book. You follow along how the relationship between Meg and Simon evolves, but it's so special and it only 'starts' at the very end of book 5. The humor is also one of my favourite things about this series. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series, although it won't be about Meg and Simon.

I'm not going to put my top three in any specific order, because all the books were my absolute favourites of 2017.

#The Finale Empire by Brandon Sanderson, 5 stars. The worldbuilding, the characters, the magic system, everything is just perfect. (I've actually just finished my reread of this book so I can finally continue with the trilogy (series).

#Gemina by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, 5 stars. This story is just as good as the first one and I can't wait to read the conclusion to this trilogy, although it will be bittersweet to say goodbye to this adventure. I'm actually going to reread Illuminae this month and Gemina next month (I'll be listening to the audiobook for this one) so I'm all prepared for Obsidio to come out in March.

#Nevernight and Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff,  both 5 stars. Holy crap, these books are soooooooo good. They are gritty and raw but also very witty. I love the sarcasm of Mister Kindly and how nothing in these books is sugar-coated. Mia is one of the sassiest and bad-ass female characters out there!
I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the third book, but again, reading the final book in the trilogy will be bittersweet. Jay has definitely become an autobuy author for me and I want to pick up his The Lotus Wars trilogy and his upcoming book LifeL1k3.

I had a really good reading year, I only DNFed one book which was Vassa in the Night. I was really intrigued when I started this book, but at some point it just got too confusing and I completely lost intrest in it.

How did your reading year go? What are some of your favourite books? Let me know in the comments.

My total number of physical TBR books is 183 (which is actually a higher number than last year :-s ) and I have 14 e-books I still need to read.

Will 2018 be the year that I finally reduce my TBR? We'll see.
I've set my Goodreads reading goal at 60.

How many TBR books do you have? What's your (GR) reading goal? Let me know in the comments.

Bye for now
